If your child is in a child care centre in Vic Park or any Perth suburb, use these techniques to keep your child well.

Child Care Centre - Beating the Odds Against Flu This Season

Most child care centre workers in Vic Park or anywhere in the Perth footprint are acutely aware of the impending flu season. We know there is no way to guarantee your child won’t get sick at some point, but we can provide tips to help you keep your child as healthy as possible.

Healthy Food Means More Vitamins

While supplements are always helpful, most nutritionists agree that vitamins are best obtained through a healthy diet. You should aim for five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruits every day. Fruits that are high in Vitamin C are preferred, as they boost the immune system by increasing white blood cells. Good examples are kiwi fruit, mandarin oranges, celery, carrots and capsicum.

Red capsicum, tomatoes and carrots contain antioxidants that help fight flu. One great way to sneak veggies and healthy foods, spices and herbs such as garlic and ginger into your child’s diet is to make a lot of soup. However, be sure not to overcook veggies in soup because it reduces their vitamin levels, especially Vitamin C.

Other Healthy Tips

  • Keep your child hydrated with plenty of water.
  • Make sure your child gets enough sleep: 11-14 hours for toddlers and 11 for preschoolers.
  • Teach your child to wash his or her hands frequently: after going to the bathroom, eating, touching animals, when they come in from outside and when they come home from school.
  • Teach your child not to touch their eyes or nose.
  • Teach them to cover up when they sneeze or cough, then wash their hands.
  • Know your child care centre’s sickness policy.

If your child has any of these symptoms, see the doctor:

  • Painful headache
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Vomiting
  • Won’t drink fluids
  • High fever that paracetamol won’t reduce
  • No improvement after 48 hours
